I'm watching it now because I love anything Ian McShane is on, and because I have had the book for like 5 years and never got around to reading it. Halfway through episode 1 and it's wild and interesting.

Ok so, finally watched Episode 1.
I'm gonna try to keep it as spoiler free as possible. First off the opening scene for the theme song is kind of cool and out there, all building up a totem pole which leads me to believe there will be A LOT of native american tidbids dropped in. The Viking Ship scene was cool, a good way to introduce a God without saying their name. I had forgot all about Shadow's fascination with Magic and coin tricks until the prison scene. as I suspected with a main protagonist named Shadow Moon, there were alot of Native American tidbits scattered throughout. Mr. Wednesday - exactly how I pictured him, the writers have managed to do some excellent foreshadowing with him already. Maybe season 1 ends where the novel ended or the full series extends that far, either way, one of the biggest plot twists has been foreshadowed. I like how they give specific little clues as to who Wednesday really is, without saying his real name. Mad Sweeny, I immediately like him almost as much as Cassidy from Preacher. He's so sarcastic, I love it. "Are you from Ireland?", "I told you I'm a leprechaun, we don't come from Moscow" The Bilquis scene, so awkward. I wondered how they were going to pull that off. Tech Kid or whatever his name is was pretty much spot on for what I was expecting. The scene with Shadow and Audrey in the graveyard, was bizarre. It went from angry to funny to depressing to shameful to empathetic all inside of like 2 minutes. (not gonna lie, I'm still LOL at "I had them put it somewhere special", so vindictive.) I don't really remember the tech thugs scene from the book so maybe it's new? not sure what happened there but Man did it look cool. when 1 of them got split up the middle, spine removed. I really want to go dig my book back out and re-read maybe I missed some hidden references. Will be back with thoughts on the other episodes later. SPOILERS BELOW there was at least 1 more God introduced in the first episode and once you know who it is, it will make complete sense. |

Hmmmm
Now I have to go back and watch the 1st episode, but if I had to guess I'd say it's either his cellmate or the bartender. |

Yeah the cellmate seems very fishy. I felt something was off about him right off the bat. I'm tempted to fuckin wikipedia the story but i'm gonna go in to this fresh. Really love the character of wednesday. I think episode two was my favorite when he met with the that family on the farm.

Yep, soon as I finished the first episode I immediately thought of you, bro. I said to myself, "Crim is gonna love this shit". It's almost exactly the sort of stuff we've been discussing for over a year now. Except instead of it being a verse it's a live action television show. Doesn't get much better than that.

Okay, so I've been rewatching American Gods episodes 1-3 and I've come to the conclusion that Shawdow is Horus/Heru/Jesus.

I seen once where someone argued that Shadow is the American version of a son-God (i.e. Jesus, Hercules, Baldur)

Yeah, it's obvious. There are parallels between Jesus/Horus/and Baldur. I'm positive he's the personification of all 3 if not other deities of light/Sun/Son and resurrection.

truth
::spoiler:: the way his wife sees him as she was hiding in her zombie state really alludes to him being something of supernatural basis. he kept glowing everytime she sees him. I always thought he was thor for some reason lol.

Ok I'm caught up....
So with Shadow glowing when Laura sees him, and she says he was the light of her life. could mean a few things 1. her life was so empty and dark because as Anubis said, she believed in nothing. So when Shadow came into her life, it gave her purpose or... a light to lead her out of the darkness, and this is how just how she sees him post mortem. 2. she sees his divine aura. or both. I'm gonna dig the book back out tonight but I never remember any hints that Shadow was Baldur but I could have missed/forgotten.

The coin is important. I think she sees him because the coin Shadow threw on her grave brought her back to life. She has already seen things that the living don't usually see. Notice that it's not just a glow she sees coming from Shadow. She sees the whole world differently (in infrared, maybe?). |

that's true, I forget what the significance of the coin is. I know it's Sweeney's lucky coin but it looks kind of like the cursed Aztec gold from Pirates of the Caribbean. I don't think the novel really delved into the history of the coin, just pointed out that's what brought her back. So it'll be interesting to see what explanation the show has for it. BTW reading the novel again, and man aside from adding extra to the story (such as the jinn, and anubis scenes with laura and the muslim lady and the tech thugs/shadow) it's word for word the book so far, I love it. I feel like it's only going to take 1-2 seasons to follow the novel but they could stretch it out I guess by introducing new/old Gods that weren't in the book or flashbacks of the old gods times in their native lands/transformation of their American versions.
