Picking up from where Law left off last month...we continue to aim for this to be a fun, inclusive community for all. Whether you are an old LA head, new to LA but not necessarily the battle scene or completely new to the scene entirely. We have a history here of elevation and innovation and we are best when we work together as a community. Thanks for continuing to support us & we want to increasingly have normal members driving the agenda here. We really are open to initiatives from you guys...
HEAT WAVE UPDATE Nigma & Exos battle currently has 4 votes cast out of a maximum of 7, it's not quite over yet but we're close to crowning a new Topical champion. Please head over to the Heat Wave board to vote and get that battle closed swiftly. Concrete has won the text tourney via no show. Here at LA we don't believe in awarding titles for just showing up so Concrete won't be crowned champion just yet...he will face the winner of the below to determine the text title holder. BATTLE ROYALE TOURNAMENT Those of you who were around for the LA X event to celebrate 10years of LA will remember the hugely successful Battle Royale...effectively a winner-stays-on knock out contest. If you're the last man standing you're the winner. Once the topical tournament is closed out we'll launch sign ups for the contest, so an extra incentive for you to go and vote. The winner will face Concrete to decide who is crowned as LA text champ. MAGAZINE Since last month we've launched the magazine (creatively titled, LA MAGAZINE). We are relying on members to make this an active and enjoyable feature of the website. So please put yourself forward to make this section a thriving part of the community. OTHER IDEAS Like I said at the top of the house, you guys are as much a part of this forum as we are & if there's anything you think would make this a more interesting, fun or enjoyable place to be then do let us know. Don't sit around and wait for us as a leadership team to make this a better site, bring the ideas and energy we need to make this a great place to be. Thanks |

Seems legit to me, it would be weird to be crowned champ simply for GETTING to the semi-final.

Implement a rule affecting the creation of a battle. I remember another rap site has one where you can't post a new battle until you've voted in two other battles. There's still active battles from September and October. If people can find the time to drop their huge verses for tournaments, post in cyphers, or frequently drop OMs, why can't they find the time to analyse short battles? It's a joke. We all have lives but you can drop a good review/vote in less than 10 minutes on some of these battles. Granted half the battles include Slip but NONE of his opponents have voted on a 2 and a half month old battle. That's 4 people with open battles that don't seem to care about voting.

@AA
The same principles/advice applies as I posted in that sticky in the open mic. If you expect people to vote on your battles you need to be voting on battles (and that's a general comment AA, as I've seen you've been putting work in). If you think about it, say a battle requires average 4/5 votes to close...you as a battler need to have a 4-1 ratio of battles you vote on to battles you participate in...otherwise battles will stay open. The link system isn't really effective. It makes it more of a faff for those who are doing the right thing & encourages shitty quality votes. The wider point is we want people to give quality feedback so it helps them to grow and battlers to grow. Anybody can go vote a battle & say "battler A won this due to throwing harder punches", that meets the definition of an explained vote, so I don't personally agree that it's necessarily the way to go. In the long run, people who don't vote on other battles won't get their battles voted on. We should operate an honour system where if we see people putting the work in and voting then we need to pay them back by voting on their battles. @Beans...it would be good to get contributions for the magazine, plus if you have other ideas would be good to get them out there to see what others think of them. |

It's a 2:1 ratio not 4:1. For every two battles you vote on, you can have one more (of course this assumes there are enough active battles at any one time, so this wouldn't be relevant if there are 0 open battles). This would mean if you had 2 battles you would have to have 4 votes, 3 battles means 6 votes, and so on.
While it encourages more people to vote, I don't necessarily believe it encourages votes of a lesser quality. The new vote approval system got implemented about a month ago, if poor votes are getting through then perhaps the people approving them need to change their guidelines. Maybe the link system isn't perfect, or even what's best for LA, but I feel as if an honour system can be implemented AFTERWARDS. For example, if you did use the link system and it had success (battles closed quicker = people aren't battle capped [like Slip, he can't post anymore because he's at 4, but I see he's voted on a few battles] = more frequently battles), then with a more engaged community we could switch out to an honour system. I strongly believe that some people don't want to battle because they don't want to wait around for a couple months for it to be closed. A system wherein battles are closed quickly (say a week or two tops) is likely to be more active. People won't feel like they're wasting their time. Now if people can think of a better way than the 'link system', I'm all ears. But I still believe something needs to be changed in the battlefield section.

Sorry but you are completely wrong about the 2-1 ratio. 2 votes doesn't close a battle. Just look at the current battlefield.
Slip v Notez - Rapper T v Stalin - Slip (1) & Notes(1) Slip v Beans - Notez (2), RapperT (1), Stalin (1) Le Mafia v Vellum - Slip (2), RapperT (2), Stalin (2) Slip v Vellum - Beans (1), Le Mafia (1) Notez v Beans - Vellum (1), Slip (1) Slip v AA - Beans (2), Vellum (2), Notez (1) Rap Daemon v Rapper T - Vellum (1), Notez (1), Slip (1) ^^^ I assumed the people go down and vote the next available battle...What happens? 1. Assuming these battles aren't all 3-0 KOs they will remain open. 2. There are people (Slip, Vellum) who aren't actually able to cast all their votes anyway. Point is, your 2-1 ratio doesn't work, it doesn't solve the problem. We have talked about changing house rules to be 'best of 3' and that might have a positive effect...I also see people having 2 round battles which is fucking stupid, who thinks they need a 2 round battle and expect people to vote that shit. This is the last post I want to see on this, if you feel hard done by you can create a suggestions thread. Don't hijack a thread that's supposed to be about positive progression with moaning. |

Given the struggle with Heat Wave the current thinking is to move more towards Battle Royale type things...but this depends on success of the Battle Royale in terms of % of people showing, number of people willing to vote, what spill over there is to other types of activity.
We are closely monitoring the situation. |

As you'll see the Battle Royale will progress very, very quickly...so you won't have much opportunity to do mags in between.
A welcome type thing would be cool but I'm very mindful of Christmas coming up and want to try and get this done before then if we can!! |

Off the back of this I've created a discussion on the mod forum about our 'agenda going forward'...once those discussions have been finalised we'll make announcements, probably in a January update.
We have a couple of Open Mic style mini event things in mind...I'll be approaching a couple of people who posted in the "Offers of Help" thread but if anyone is interested in running that type of thing please let me know, either in here, via PM, or Skype and we can get things going. I'd like there to be a mixture of members & admin running these initiatives so we don't end up relying on the efforts of one person as things can quickly fall down if life events happen. |
