yo, I do not intend to turn it into something big but I'd like one day to be able to make a piece of music and be proud of it. I've always been a hands-on person, not so much of a creative. But I wanna make a song and be happy with how it sounds. Plenty of other little life goals like this, but this one is the only relevant one to this site. Besides sounding like a generic aussie, I can't fix that, wondering if anyone (i guess specifically the audio heads) have suggestions for software and equipment to use to record with? I've tried recording my writtens a bunch of times but it never goes well, only ever using on-board microphone (not a good idea) and gaming headsets (also not a great idea -- less background noise than on-board but just sounds subpar).

Cheers.
Show me a fortress and I'll show you a ruin.

You know, you can make recordings sounds good with even crappy equipment. A generic 50 dollar mic and a DAW already does miracles. Hell, you can even record with your phone and make that sound pretty okay through mixing and mastering.

I think Neek, LP and Doom can help you with the equipment part if you do want that extra touch up on the quality.

I will say this. If you say you are bad at recording, then having better equipment and better mixes won’t do much. It’s best to have a better recording and do less mixing on it. If you mix shit, it’s still shit. Then again you can have a good recording and give it a shit mix and that’s no bueno either.

It all depends what youre really looking for. Can you potentially get good recordings? Then sure dope, invest some bread into it. If not then stay on the very low end of spending instead of throwing money away. Maybe just get some usb mic.

If you do want to spend money we would need to have an idea of how much. $200? $500? $700? $10,000?

When it comes to equipment I’d say neek is most knowledgeable. But I can tell you set ups I’d get depending on how much you want to spend.

Example if you not going this cheaper usb way. You gonna want a mic and a preamp. Then from there the debates start. Spend more on mic or pre amp? Should the pre amp be solid state or tube? Do you have proper headphones that you can track (record) and also mix with? Do you want or need studio monitors (studio quality speakers).

I got a decent mic but need a better pre amp for instance. Then I have some old headphones I track with but use studio monitors to do my mixing with. For me I just can’t stand haveing headphones on for an elongated period of time, so I do my mixing thru the monitors instead of headphones.

When it comes to DAW, this is very important to. You want to use soemthing you’ll
Be happy with in the long run. Changing the DAW you use blows donkey dick as it’s a pain in the ass to learn a new daw in my experience. That being said I use Reaper. It’s imo the best free one. By free I mean they sell it for $60 but I’m working on 2 years now on my free trial. They never force you to buy it.

What I currently use is
Daw - Reaper
Mic - bluebird
Pre - Scarlett 2i2
Headphones - generation 1 beats by dre studio
Monitors - Yamaha HS8

What I want to get is RNP as my pre amp. It’s a real nice pre (see what I did there?. And then just some decent power strip/conditioner or whatever it’s called. Also still need isolation pads for my monitors.
