I catch myself writing short bars. I cant seem to get a lengthy bar written down. I feel as if this making it more of a poetic verse than anything else. Is there thoughts on how I can construct more lengthy bars. I know this may sound stupid. I just feel as if they should be longer

I have the same problem my bars never reach the 10-12 syllables mark. I tend to write everything let the creatives juices flowing and start cutting words and replacing words that fit better with the flow or bar. I rather have words cut off rather than find words to smash in. I hope that helps you while somebody with better knowledge comes along.

Don't feel obligated to lengthen your bars Diz, it's almost "old school" to write longer bars . Actually it seems LA prefers the short bar method, why put yourself at a disadvantage? If you really wanted to I'd up my vocab, larger words consume more space.

Hey Dtk,

I have actually been able to shorten them somewhat. I realized that longer bars aren't the way to go. I catch my self once in a while making a runoff bar but it works with the flow. Ill lead a line into the second with a rhyme and it works. Giggz on thehgoo

I wouldn't change it if it isn't broken. To incorporate personals I was writing bars with like 18-22 syllables. All the feedback I got from established heads was always tellin me to shorten those bars. I found it hard to shorten while still articulating the point. So if you can do that already, take it as a plus. There aren't that many who drop long bar in battle and do it well, art, law and dress for example, are good at long bar. They use it to incoporparate personals, but if it's against someone where the focus is less on personals you'll find they drop more of a short bar.

Tldr, short bars great for embellishing the punchline. Long bars better for embellishing a point. They both have pro's and cons.

^^ the reason it's hard is because it's easier to come up with a concept that doesn't flow than it is to come up with a concept that flows well...

Anyone can write anything if they have long enough lines.

The reason people advise others to shorten their bars isn't necessarily because the shorter line style is preferred, it's because it naturally flows better. If you have good rhythm/flow in a longer bar there's no real issue there...it's just that it's much harder to achieve & often a "rookie" mistake is to try and pack loads of content in and sacrificing flow. So the solution is to shorten the line length to naturally boost the flow, then once you've learnt that lesson you can go back to a longer line length if you want...

In other words, it's often a technical issue rather than a style issue. If everyone is dropping short bars and you can pull off longer lines while maintaining rhythm/flow you will stand out.

This post definitely explains a lot. I was told that my lines were short and I should try to make them longer but it's difficult for me as a beginner to drop hard shit with long bars.
