Honestly... It's not a physical thing, it's a skill that should always be there. I just don't understand it. Like, I'm not talking about the one's who fell to addiction or just life problems. But some who have come back. It just makes no sense to me. Nas hasn't fallen off... Em has, but how? Was it his drug addiction? Idk. but rapping is a skill that should always be there, how does anyone get worse. I would mention lil wayne, but he had like two good albums.. IF. Mac miller, he was better a few years ago, now his shit downgraded. HOW? I honestly can't find a good way to explain this, but I'm sure if someone comments I'll be able to explain exactly what I want to prove.

Simple answer we will take nas as a example his first drop illmatic sick as fuck all the way tjrew not a song i wouldnt listen to next two albums few classic tracks rest filler bullshit then stillmatic dropped n it was fire front to back . my take is they start to loose there hunger or it just has to do with there life in general n what there goin threw or if there inspired by something. its like everything ur gonna have ur ups n downs n transitions

It's not a rap thing, it's anything creative.

Being someone who does an 'art' as an actual job, I sympathize with it. It constantly depends on motivation, who you work with, what direction you take, when you decide to swerve to another, etc.

I don't stop being a good actor at core, but certain directors bring it out of me more, as well as certain other actors being easier to work with. However, I then run the risk of becoming comfortable/complacent, as well as typecasting myself as a certain thing.

But then when I decide to change my environment, it could push me, or it could end up being an experience that dampens my confidence, wastes my time, or makes me enjoy my job less.

It's the same with musicians. Any form of art is a constant tightrope walk, where decisions compile to something positive or negative.

Pac, Biggie, Kobain and Curtis would've 'fell off' by definition eventually. Things change, ages change, motives change, intentions change, attitudes change, etc.

I guess so, I was gonna mention their hunger. That doesn't mean that they can't look at what they're writing and think "I've written way better than this shit."

Artists don't see it like that though, cos that's just your opinion as a listener.

You don't reach heights with your listener/viewer unless you try things and persevere, because if you just locked yourself away, refusing to release anything to the public unless it was 'similar to your past stuff', then you'd go mental within yourself, and probably do a worse job, an imitation.

You like Eminem, so for example, if Eminem had pursued with trying to recreate several SSLP's, instead of changing attitude/style/intention in MMLP and Eminem Show, we wouldn't be hearing of him now, that's for sure. It's easy to criticize when it's a big leap in style, like Em's, due to a crazy circumstance like his drug shit, and him now being a sober 40 year old. But artists make movement all the time.

I guess so. But I'm saying rappers should be able to top their best work. Don't you think Nas has/had the ability to top Illmatic? It's the effort.

But that's the thing, he'll never make another illmatic, but that's not to say that he won't make stuff that some find as better.

Illmatic was Nas at his peak of popularity, it was his stamp on hip hop, his legacy, his influence. But if he ever made a replica to try and outdo that album, it was flop like fuck. However, in a time where he has less power, he might make something in a different direction that inspires this new generation.

Nostalgia plays a huge part too.

Eminem Show will always be my favourite Eminem album, cos it was my favourite as a kid. Full stop. Every time I listen to it, I think of my childhood, school, my friends, a time where I had no worries, a time where I was just getting serious about music.

Eminem could create an utter classic right now. But it will never compare to Eminem Show, not because of anything he's done, but because of me as a listener.

It's not all 'effort' or owt like that.

Eminem show is my favorite too. But I'm not saying Nas would need to copy Illmatic's style. I'm saying that his skill level could've been improved more than where it was already at.

I don't even believe in 'falling off'.

It's a dramatic way of saying 'I don't like their music at the moment'.

And it's going to always happen, cos art is subjective. And it plays with an artists mind man.

It's like when I have to listen to people that don't act, tell me that an actor that I appreciate, 'can't act'. No other form of work, but ones in art, could you have people being able to slander your knowledge on what you do for a living, because they've formed an opinion.

Dude, I'm not saying Em put out wack music. I liked recovery. I don't get what some of these "hip hop heads" are saying . Recovery wasn't bad at all.
