um... frank doesn't know what's good or not... that's why he thinks it's good.

Jay Z can never rival chino's and none of jay z's shit is NEVER consistently clever.

jay z is still called by many (idiots) the beat rapper alive.

I didnt read alla this, jus the first cuple of posts....but in terms of "new hiphop being crap" er, no...not at all

This commerical shit IS NOT hiphop, its rap...its popular music...it sucks, G-Unit arent hiphop, Eminem isnt really hiphop...hiphop is a lifestyle and and artform...I hate rap, fuckin sucks...HipHop is still dope - has a message and some artists are dropping fire

Old skool...Ima keep it real and say I aint really listened to that much oldskool hiphop...I love Rakim - think he the illest emcee alive, havent really listened to KRS-1 at all but plan to get some of his albums (but that mf gah so fukin many - which do I get ) As Orion knows I havent listened to Chino XL...or Immortal Tech 4 that matter

Big Pun, Biggie, Pac are all dope lyricists, enjoy all those artists...its hard to say which I like the best, prolly BiG the most, then Rakim, then Royce but its nah really bout an order...its about who your feeling and who your not...and Im not feeling rap (aka Lil Flip) but I mean in terms of chill out some of it is OK (but thats prolly coz I havent listened 2 ppl like ALicia Keys so I still think the otha stuff is OK)

My 2cents, keep tha change

The reason many people think old school hip-hop is much better than the new shit is because people have had time to uncover the lesser known rappers and we grew up with those styles so their natural to us. But with this new shit, we still don't know all the talent out there plus the general style is changing and it takes getting used to.  Plus its hard to match Biggie or Pac.

New Hip-Hop is still better than a lot of people give it credit for. Like Ice said, thru Hip-Hop nowadays is just as good as ever, its mainstream rap that has totally been diluted.

OLD vs NEW

OLD: The best artists went mainstream (as mainstream as they could be back in the 80's)

NEW: The mainstream artists are not the best, and the beat ones are not mainstream.

Nothing's changed but the exposure and glorification of mediocrity and marketting to a feeble-minded public.

OLd skool rules new hiphop, new hip hop is shit i personally think, i think eminem is turning shit, never really like jay z, and p diddy well fuck him lol.
every person round my area is into all that shit like just lose it and jay z thankfully there is a small majority of people who listen and like the old stuff myself and clipz included
i really do think that hip hop needs to change quick unless it wants to turn straight into POP {which is shit}

jehu has it pretty well down packed.

The real statment that the majority of the posts in this thread (becides the ones goin off at frank) are essentially not stating that Old or new skool is better, but wether main stream is good or not, and in my view it has ruined alot of rappers (old and new skool). so i stand by my reasoning that MTV has essentially killed music (the stuff that reaches the mainstream ears) look back before MTV there was more varity and most bands used atleast one instrument. Now, this age of MTV, synths have taken away the sounds of a real instrument, which in some genres of music is good (eg rap/hip hop) but in the majority of others has made all music more electronica /techno then any other style and once uve heard 1 uve heard them all.

As i stated before jehu has realy hit the nail on the head with his statment, esspecially the last comment. Commerciallism is 1 of the many things that is wrong with our western world. The majority of marketing playes on the sences enticing you to buy or purchace the object because if u do ull b in with the "in" crowd and the purchace of this product will essentially enrich your life. Take fast food adds for example all the words are chosen 2 play on ur desire/need to eat. And the display of the item always looks better than the one that u purchace. MTV is just another way 4 the commercialists (coke, pepsi, nike etc) to broardcast their names and items by adding their name to mainstream artists.

Now back to the topic, i agree with Orion saying Music is a form of art, each peice is an expression of something (emotion ect), but like all art it is there to be enjoyed and scrutinised so most people do either one, the other or both, which has obviously been displayed in the previous posts.

And finally I say again that MTV killed music and would like to add that nothing beats live music, nothing
