i want to start writing some song/ freestyle sounding raps.

started listening to Big L's freestyles etc

and just wondering what would you call this style of rapping, and how would you go about it. is it like an open mic style of rap.

just rapping about anything, making multis work nicely, getting the flow perfect and bigging yourself up ???

ie..."Yo, fuck all the glamours and glitz, I plan to get rich
I'm from New York and never was a fan of the Knicks
And I'm all about expandin my chips
You mad cause I was in the van with your bitch
with both hands on her tits"

something like that -

and how would yous go about it?

there in lies the topic of one of the oldest controversies in hip hop... and to be honest, there is no real correct answer...

but if you're lookin' to change ya style up, or even try an use a style like Big L did, just practice at it... that's the only way you gon' make it work...

Big L
"I'm telling you shit is about to get drastic soon,
I'm quick to blast a goon and break a motherfucker like a plastic spoon"
&
"I cook the mic like a beef steak, 'cuz my technique's great,
and I'm that nigga police hate in each state"

he tended to use a lot of multi's throughout each bar, instead of just 2 or more words at the end of a line... so try and write down a bunch of 2 word multisylable rhymes that all match up and use them relevantly in a verse...

ie...

black night
flash ice
last rites
smash mic's

then try to use them effectively in a verse... and they HAVE to be relevant, which is what made Big L as good as he was... anyone here could put those words in a verse, but if it doesn't lyrically make sense, it won't be shit...

and to make a "song", does it have to have a meaning, or a point to a song. or just be talking about myself? or does it matter

thnx alot.

one of the easiest topics and the most historic in rap music is the "big up" track

you basically just rap about your gift, your skill, how you can rip a mic, how you do shit better than anyone else...

which is why i dont understand how people can hate on an MC when they make that kind of track... because it is so deeply rooted in hip-hop
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v313/G-Pfeif/SuckaMCTo-DoList.png" />

"I'll put a Loss to ya name like a Mexican City"

"Ill Put an L to ya EGO like them building blocks"

the more of a point or meaning a song has, the more in depth and on point it has to be, so technically it is harder to do (or, at least it is harder to do WELL)...

metaphors/ wordplay are easy when they aren't that in depth... or even when talking about yourself or someone else, which is why the "sick" "ill" "dope" plays are all played... people use them in reference to themselves or others and have throughout most the time hip hop has been around... therefore, original and clever plays are scarce...
to cover a topic or idea very well and in depth with original style, rhymes and plays is what every real mcee should be aiming at being able to do, although very few will actually be able to do it....

as long as your style is on point and you keep your rhymes and plays original, there will always be someone that likes your shit, and no matter what or who you are, there will always be someone that hates on your shit... and that's the honest truth of it...

just keep workin' at it an' do what you think sounds good...

Uhh... ya flow always needs to be perfected...that's the first thing u need to work on... and ya rhymes should always be original and emphatic... so practice those even if it's just generic shit to start with...get those on point

As far as concepts go... u can do anything really... I agree with G-Pfeif, kickin' some charismatic "I'm the man" shit is definitely one of the classics... don't overdo it but it's always something good to fuck with... otherwise? Anything... that's imagination, that's gotta come from u, rap what u wanna rap about... it bugs me when people ask for shit to write about...'the fuck is that, it's your talent...use it...if u got nothin', then it's probly not for u... Obviously there's writer's block, but that's not what this sounds like

Anyway, thatta do for now

peace
. . . Now who said they fuckin' with me?
They just said that FUCKIN' with me
They didn't mean it
Nah . . .

Firstly, Good Work On Listening To Big L Wink

To Make A Rap Actually Sound Like It Could Lyrically Be Rapped By Someone As Good As Big L, Big Pun Etc.  Is Multies. Theyre The Key To Everything, Rather Than...

Somethin Somethin Somethin Mack Woods
Somethin Somethin Somethin Back Could

Somethin Like...

Somethin Somethin Wack Mack Woods
Ownin The Game, Holdin The Strain Like Ya Back Could
Somethin Somethin Somethin Raps Get Slapped Up

Rather Than Just Havin Rhymes At The End Of Lines, Try And Have Them In The Sentence, Like One Word That Rhymes With One Word From The Multie. Sounds Complicated I Know, But You Should Get It.

lol, yeh ano, always found it hard to write like "song" verses.

im just messing with multis at the min... starting with the easy sounding one.

People better watch me like a clock, If not,

youll get rocked, until yo body drops

5 shots, the blocks shocked, yo mothers door knocked

its the cops, she starts crying, like shell never stop.

needs serious work lol.

how do yous go about writing a verse for a song, especially one about nothing in particular.

i think i need to write more about what i know lol. 5 shots and all that's probably stupid for me to write.

* edit lol, thanks point, ill work on that. your verse better than mine lol*

He just happened to be good at multis too

Punchline styles are like Cassidy, Lloyd Banks, JR Writer

My favourite kind to be honest

nasically... the key is:

emerse yourself in that type of music... listen to big L, JR Writer, cassidy, fabolous, etc.

they are punchline rappers... they all have similar styles...

listen to a track that is about biggin themselves up... it doesnt really matter too much what you put in there... just whatever youre feeling.. as long as its lyrical
